Episode Notes

I was born in Brooklyn, New York (perhaps you noticed my accent), Like a lot of folks, I had a few traumatic events in my early years. I was the oldest of 3 sisters and two brothers and my mother was a disciplinarian. From an early age, I had plenty of chores. They were a lot of secrets in my family, and I always tried to stay under the radar for fear I would provoke my mother’s ire. Overall, I had a happy childhood and as a teen, I was shy and withdrawn. I always remained positive no matter what life threw my way. I would classify myself at that as an introvert. Always cautious and shy. I received my diploma from a Catholic high school and decided to forgo college and go to work. At 21 I moved to my own place in Manhattan. Finally, I had freedom and was both excited and fearful to be on my own. Soon thereafter I acclimated myself to city life and all the parties that went with it. Alcohol and drugs became a big part of my life, and I was like a kid in a candy store. This took place during the seventies and eighties.

Eventually, this lifestyle started to take a toll on me, both physically and mentally. I became angry and high-strung and would drink to excess. I wasn’t happy and I felt a black hole building inside of me. I was disconnected. I decided I needed to leave this environment because it was too toxic. Eventually, I moved to Minnesota and got the help I needed. This was a turning point in my life and it allowed me to grow personally first and then spiritually. I had a lot of work to do. I started reading self-help books, going to the gym, doing breathing exercises, and meditating. I didn’t know it at the time but I had a mindset shift. Gradually I was becoming a new person. By the grace of God, the spiritual connection was back. I decided I wanted to help people who were in the same unfortunate situation that I had been in, and so I started sharing and passing on the positive things I learned. At this point, I was living in San Diego and went back to National University College where I got a bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Science. I started to  learn about myself and how I could rejoin the world. I sought out a therapist to work on my past traumas and free myself from all that prevented me from moving forward. I volunteered with AmeriCorps for one year and from there, I started working as a Personal Care attendant helping people with disabilities.

I recently moved to Charleston South Carolina as sort of a retirement home and I worked part-time as a Para Transit driver. I had a handicapped-equipped bus and I would drive seniors to and from their doctor’s appointments. This past November I quit my job and put all my effort into starting the Joseph James Mindset Coaching business. Once I realize I could use my experience and my passion to help others, I was grateful and ready to get going. To be able to do this at this point in my life was like a miracle to me.
